Equipment

4.5 out of 5 4.5

The Mazda 3 comes well equipped and even entry-level S models have four airbags, remote central locking, CD stereo, electric front windows, heated electric mirrors, an auxiliary input for iPods and MP3 players and ABS with electronic brake force distribution. TS models add electric rear windows, 15-inch alloys, air conditioning, driver's seat height adjustment and lumbar support plus steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

In May 2008 the TS was replaced by the Takara which has climate control air conditioning audio controls, driver’s seat adjustable lumbar support, rear seat centre armrest and full length curtain airbags, plus five equipment items from the higher-spec TS2 derivative, including 16-inch alloy wheels, leather rimmed steering wheel and gear knob, electric rear windows (with global opening/closing), a trip computer and a 6-CD auto-changer.

TS2 models have automatic climate control, curtain airbags, traction control plus an electronic stability programme, 16-inch alloy wheels. Sport models add a premium audio system, 17-inch alloys and automatic xenon headlamps. From May 2008 the TS2 is replaced by the Sport.

Safety

3.5 out of 5 3.5

The Mazda 3 was awarded four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, but although this is good, the majority of newer rivals are now gaining five stars. All cars get ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) plus driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags (on all but the entry-level S hatchback), seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, plus both a collapsible steering column and brake pedal.

Euro NCAP Rating

The Mazda 3 Hatchback (04-08) was tested by Euro NCAP in and received the following safety ratings:

  • Adult Occupant - 4 stars
  • Child Occupant - 3 stars
  • Pedestrian - 2 stars

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.

Interior & boot space

3.5 out of 5 3.5

The rear seats split 60/40 and the backs fold down but aside from that they don't do anything particularly clever. Still, boot space is reasonable with 346-litres on offer, which is more than the Volkswagen Golf, and storage is a strong point with large cupholders on the centre console and useful door pockets. Unlike other small hatchbacks, there's no estate version available, although there is a saloon.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Mazda 3 Hatchback (04-08) compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Vauxhall Astra Hatchback (04-10) 350 litres
Kia Ceed Hatchback (07-12) 340 litres
Mazda 3 Hatchback (04-08) 339 litres
Citroën C4 Hatchback (04-10) 314 litres
