The majority of the engines are reasonably economical, insurance is cheap for the class and servicing at Mazda dealers is usually reasonable. Improvements made mid-2006 see slight benefits in fuel economy, enough for 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol versions to be placed in a lower road tax bracket than before.
Estimated fuel cost per year

|Unleaded||128p||£1,385 - £2,007 *|
|Diesel||131p||£993 - £1,267 *|
* The estimated fuel cost figure is based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles and is a guide to how much this model will cost in fuel each year. It's calculated using the model's average MPG (calculated from both town centre and motorway driving) and the average fuel price from around the country. Actual fuel costs will vary based on driving style and road conditions.

How much is it to insure?
Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered before 01 March 2001 it is based on engine size. For cars registered on or after 01 March 2001 the VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions.
The 3 performs well on the eco front and with an average of 159g/km CO2 across the range, its emissions are relatively low for a small family hatchback. The greenest model in the line-up is the 1.6-litre diesel which emits 128g/km of CO2 (in both 90bhp and 109bhp guise) and averages 60mpg.
Highest and lowest CO2 emissions
|Engine||CO2 emissions||Road tax (12 months)|
1.6 D (90ps) Diesel,
1.6 D Diesel,
|125 g/km (Min)||£125|
|2.3T Petrol||231 g/km (Max)||£555|
The Mazda has proven good so far and the firm has a strong reputation for well built and reliable cars. Its predecessor, the 323, was supremely reliable.

|Engine / gearbox||A recall in 2004 for cars with the 1.6-litre diesel engine. It was found that it's possible for the engine to seize after the car has covered 62,000 miles. Check that the work to fix this has been done. Another recall in 2008 where an engine mounting may fail under sudden acceleraration.|
