Mazda expects many buyers will plump for the lower-powered diesel engine thanks to its high fuel economy of 62.8mpg and low CO2 emissions of 119g/km. This will keep both fuel costs and tax bills favourable for both private buyers and company car drivers. If you’re concerned with Mazda CX-5 running costs then beware of the automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive options, since choosing these will affect economy and emissions.
One thing to note is that all of the diesel engines are ‘Euro6’ compliant.

How much is it to insure?
Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered before 01 March 2001 it is based on engine size. For cars registered on or after 01 March 2001 the VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions.
The Mazda CX-5 emissions levels are competitive. The lowest-emitting engine is the 2.2-litre diesel unit in 148bhp guise, which when fitted with front-wheel-drive emits 119g/km CO2. Combined fuel economy is 62.8mpg. This means low company car tax and road tax costs. The petrol engine emits 139g/km and will return 47.1mpg on the combined cycle.

As there’s so much new and innovative about the CX-5, it’s difficult to assess how reliable the car will be at this time. Many of the components haven’t gone through the rigours of testing via the general public as they’ve been created specifically for this car. However, the firm has a fairly strong reputation when it comes to general vehicle resilience so we don’t anticipate any major Mazda CX-5 reliability problems.
