My remit was to buy at banger money a future classic and for it to be an every day reliable car. A tall ask, but after much research, I went for a Mercedes C180 5 speed auto W202 saloon in silver.
I paid £750 for a car that has proven 100% reliable, comfortable, can cruise all day long at 70mph, and can take 4/5 adults and luggage. Add to this annual servicing of about £100, 30 mpg, tyres £25, £220 insurance, £270 road tax, easy to find parts on ebay and that it is now valued at £1,500. For toys and safety, it has elec windows all round, ABS, central locking, 4 airbags and aircon.
Mercedes before the W202 had no safety and no toys. Mercedes after this were made of plastic and balsa wood.
If you have to buy cheap, DONT just get a cheap car, get a cheap Mercedes W202 C Class.
