The Mercedes CLS coupe has a bespoke feel to it, yet Mercedes only offers two trim levels for this car. It comes in standard or Sport trims and all pre 2014 models have a seven-speed automatic gearbox (after 2014 a selection gained the new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic), Attention Assist, ESP, six airbags, Isofix child seat mounts, Pre-Safe safety system and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Standard equipment

The standard trim level of the Mercedes CLS comes with five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, Direct Control Comfort suspension and electrically assisted power steering. It also has auto dimming door mirrors with electric adjustment and heating, Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, Parktronic with Active Park Assist to help find and guide the car into parking spaces, LED rear lights, automatic windscreen wipers and heated windscreen washers.

Metallic paint is standard for the CLS, as is black leather upholstery and black ash wood trim, DAB digital radio, CD stereo with six-disc autochanger, MP3 connection, Bluetooth for hands-free mobile phone use, and Mercedes’ COMAND media interface with 7-inch colour display screen, satellite navigation and voice control. In 2014 the screen was changed for an 8-inch example that sits proud of the dashboard

Further standard fare for the CLS includes climate control, electric windows all round, electric front seat adjustment, remote boot release and illuminated door handles.

If you choose the Sport version of the CLS, you get AMG floor mats, a front armrest with storage compartment, sports pedals and AMG three-spoke steering wheel, and for the CLS500 Sport you get Black Passion leather upholstery.

Other standard stuff for the CLS Sport covers AMG front and rear lower bumpers, Intelligent Light System with Active Light System to help see further round corners at night, High Beam Assist to automatically dip the headlights when the car senses oncoming traffic, sports-tuned suspension and 19-inch AMG alloy wheels.

Mercedes CLS accessories

Mercedes CLS customers can choose from a selection of 18- and 19-inch optional alloy wheels, semi-active air suspension (which is standard on the CLS500), an electric glass sunroof, remote boot closing and reversing camera that is only available in conjunction with the COMAND Online system.

Other options include the COMAND Online system that comes with sat-nav and DVD player, while an uprated Harman Kardon stereo is also on offer, as well as a television tuner.

In 2014 a new Multibeam LED lighting system was added to the options list, with 24 individual high performance LED chips the new system can operate each independently of each other. That means it dazzles other drivers less and reacts quicker and high beam performance is far increased, with a range of around 485-metres.

Mercedes usual safety options are on the accessory list, including Lane Tracking, Blind Spot Assist and Speed Limit Assist. A roof rack is another option for the CLS, as are leather seats in a variety of colours and finishes, massage front seats, position memory for the front seats, ambient lighting and remote garage door opener.

5 out of 5 5.0

Mercedes-Benz CLS safety is excellent. Nine airbags that include the conventional driver and passenger airbags are standard. There’s more – the CLS comes with additional protection including kneebag, pelvisbags and windowbags to give the occupants the very best in interior safety. New systems include Attention Assist that assesses your driving and advises you to take a break if it believes you are losing concentration or becoming drowsy.

Active Blind Spot, which warns the driver if a car is passing on the motorway, is also available as an option. This also includes technology that will activate and apply braking force to the wheels via ESP if it thinks a collision is imminent. Active Lane Keeping Assist is now linked to ESP which means that if the driver veers over the white lines in the road the system will gently apply the brakes to bring the vehicle back on course.

A display on the instrument cluster warns the driver at the same time. If broken lane markings are crossed the system controls an electric pulse generator in the steering wheel, which generates vibrations for a short time – a discreet but highly effective cue to countersteer immediately. Before the braking system intervenes, the steering wheel always vibrates to provide a warning.

Interior & boot space

3 out of 5 3.0

The CLS is a practical tourer. It can seat four adults and comes with 520 litres of load space – more than enough room for at least two sets of golf clubs. As with the previous generation there is no middle seat: this space is taken by a central console that extends to the front of the car. Keeping change and maps handy is easy as there’s plenty of good-sized cubbies and amply proportioned door pockets.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupe (11-18) compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Audi A7 Sportback (10-18) 535 litres
Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupe (11-18) 475 litres
Volkswagen Passat CC (08-11) 452 litres
BMW 6-Series Coupé (04-10) 450 litres
