Safety

3.5 out of 5 3.5

You might expect that deadlocks are a given in a car of this calibre, but Mercedes don't fit them, believing them to be a hindrance to rescuers in the event of an accident. Other than that, safety and security are first class.

Interior & boot space

3.5 out of 5 3.5

Space is in abundance, especially in the limousine. But the boot size may surprise - it's not as big as you might expect of a car of this size. There's good stowage though with decent door pockets and a large cubby under the central armrest - however there's only one cupholder.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (99-05) compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
BMW 7-Series (02-08) 500 litres
Audi A8 Saloon (03-11) 500 litres
Mercedes-Benz S-Class (99-05) 500 litres
Jaguar XJ Saloon (03-09) 470 litres
