Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster (1996 - 2004) Driving & Performance
Supercharged engines offer sparkling, smooth performance; 200K is brisk; 3.2 V6 is creamily refined but not that much quicker than 230K and best with the latest six-speed manual gearbox; rare 350 bhp AMG version is wickedly quick.
Designed for cruising rather than tearing up twisty alpine roads so don't expect razor sharp responses. However it handles safely, the ride is typically Mercedes-Benz, rather than sports car.
Obedient; good balance and grip; safe, stable but just a touch sedate. Mercedes' manual gearbox is typically un-sporty to use, and as such the automatic gearbox is the more popular model.
The cockpit is quite cosy for space, but is as quite as a coupe with the roof up. Leg and head room are limited for those who are particularly tall. Seats are saloon car comfortable rather than sportscar supportive.
