Since the Cooper D disappeared from the price lists, the Clubman’s become a petrol-only range. As there’s no plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or fully electric option – nor will there be in this generation’s time in production – it doesn’t boast any fuel-miserly versions as its rivals do.

Under the most recent WLTP test cycle, the Clubman’s fuel efficiency and CO2-emission figures appear to have worsened. Back in the real world, a 2021 Cooper will be fairly similar to a 2015 version in terms of thirst. In a nutshell, the automatics are more fuel efficient than the manuals, but the JCW will hurt your bank balance the most. None are particularly impressive compared to newer mild and full hybrid rivals.

Buying a MINI Clubman isn’t a particularly cheap experience. With no really stripped-out base model, prices start from around £22,000. Begin specifying much-needed equipment, such as the larger infotainment screen, and the price soon starts to creep up. It’s all too easy to spend over £30,000 on even a relatively basic model – choose the JCW and that price begins to look towards £40,000 territory with options. Still, resale values remain strong.

Sevicing costs can be kept reasonable by buying bundles of inspections in advance rather than paying as you go, although genuine parts aren’t especially cheap.

MINI typically performs decently well in reliability and owner satisfaction surveys, with good customer service from a strong and wide-ranging dealer network. Plenty of the Clubman’s components are also based on tried-and-tested items from the Hatch and Countryman, too.

Particularly impressive is that since it was launched in 2015 there hasn’t been a single official recall for the Clubman by the DVSA, reinforcing how thoroughly engineered it is.
