When we’re learning to drive, one of the first checks we’re taught to make is the one over our right shoulder. Committing to a manoeuvre without first checking the blind spot is a commonly made mistake, yet can have catastrophic consequences and especially at speed. To avoid an accident in the event of driver negligence, manufacturers have started including sensors to detect cars in the blind spot.

They’re incredibly useful driver aids that could save you from a crash on the wrong day, but how do they work? On this page we’ll explore what blind spot monitors are and whether you need them.

How do blind spot monitors work?

Much like adaptive cruise control (ACC), blind spot monitors use radar waves to detect when another vehicle is within the driver’s blind spot. If one is detected, the car will alert the driver using a visual or audible signal – and some may even issue a haptic alert, by vibrating the steering wheel for instance.

Alerts will often escalate if the driver has activated the indicator on the side of the hidden vehicle, suggesting they’re about to move into danger.

Advanced active blind spot assist systems like those found the in Mercedes C Class can even engage evasive manoeuvring if the system senses the car is about to collide with another.

Do I need blindspot monitors?

While many car makers are willing to include blind spot monitoring as part of a wider safety suite of technology, if blind spot monitors aren’t included, they are a worthwhile upgrade.

For those drivers frequently travelling on motorways, blind spot monitors could save your life. Those who do most of their driving in town may still find blind spot monitoring technology useful to avoid cyclists and other road users. Want to improve your road safety on a budget? Consider investing in a set of blind spot mirrors instead.
