If you’re buying new, you need to be prepared to take a hit of depreciation – though this isn’t really worse than many other cars of this type. However buying nearly new or used is the best bet and there are some excellent deals around. Insurance and servicing are generally good for a car of this size and fuel consumption is good on the diesel models.

Peugeot offers a wide range of diesel engines in the 407 giving drivers plenty of opportunity to minimise their carbon dioxide emissions. The 1.6 HDi has CO2 emissions of 140g/km, while even the potent 2.2 HDi with 170bhp emits 160g/km of CO2. In 2009 the 1.6 HDi was made even more efficient with CO2 emissions dropping to 129g/km and economy improving to 58mpg.

The 407 shouldn’t let you down too much on the mechanical side, although there have been continual problems with fuel pipes on diesel models. Electrics are still prone to occasional glitches too while loose trim and niggly faults are a worry. There have been numerous recalls since it was launched.
