How much space is there?

In total the Renault Captur is little longer than a traditional small SUV and the front seats have been sculpted to free up some extra space for longer legs in the rear. Rear seat space is pretty good anyway, as long as you don’t have the bench slid forwards.

However, you’ll only be sliding it forwards to free up some extra boot space anyway, so buyers can pick and choose what their priorities are. It’s just a shame you can’t slide individual seats. 

Should you have a couple of lanky friends or family members that you often cart about, we’d recommend taking a look at the Skoda Kamiq. It thrashes everything in the class for both head and leg room, giving even tall folk room to stretch out a little.

Boot space and storage

With the seats slid back, there’s 444 litres of room on offer with the boot floor in its lowest setting (395 with it set higher). If you slide the seats forwards, total space is an impressive 536 litres, while the seat backs split 60:40 to free up some more space – up to 1,334 litres.

Just remember there’s basically no rear legroom when the seats are forwards, while hybrid versions of the Captur have a significantly smaller boot. It makes the regular E-Tech hybrid merely average for the class, while the plug-in is particularly piffling. 

There’s a good amount of extra storage throughout, with big door bins, a central armrest and cupholders between the seats. Beneath the climate controls there’s an area to keep your mobile phone, while automatic cars come with a slightly different centre console design with an area beneath the gearlever for extra bits and pieces.

A key factor in people buying small SUVs is the ease of access, and the Captur sits a little higher than the Skoda Kamiq and Ford Puma, and is easier to get in and out of as a result. 

Is it easy to park? 

The Captur is pretty compact and all models get reversing sensors to help in tight spots. That’s handy as the rear pillars are rather thick. If you want more help, you’ll need to spec front parking sensors and a rear camera, too.
