Other Smart Fortwo (2004 - 2007) models:

  • Summary

    5 out of 5 5.0

What does this car say about you?

That you enjoy being a little different that ,perhaps, you care a little for the whole 'green issue' . Its 85% recyclable and that is important.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Most people are very surprised when they have a go in it and change there view readily. Most would like to own one but don't see the purpose in having a second car with only two seats. I agree with that but it is also extremely cheap to run which is sort of the point of this car.

Would you buy this car again and why?

I would definetely like to try a Brabus but in truth the stability issue with something so tall means that 61 Hp is probably enough. As long as you remember what you are driving it is great fun and other motorists cannot believe how it can go sometimes.

What are you likely to buy next?

I don't know yet. I suspect the new Smart will be better, more capable, but also more expensive taking it closer to mainstream superminis which it can't compete with on account of the seating. A difficult question.

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchise

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £4,950

When did you buy the car?

    July 2006

Did you get a good deal and why?

An unbelievable deal. Got the car from a Smart dealer, an approved used car, 7000 miles, 8 months old for £4950. It had been sitting around for too long so they needed their money back. Its still, even now, at least £800 less than dealers are asking for identical cars.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Had a Yaris diesel previously, wanted something with a bit more character, but still very cheap to run. This car is it. Personality in spade fulls.

    What was the dealer like?

Despite the bad press Merc dealers have Inchcape of Derby were excellent. Bought the car over the phone and got the train to Derby to pick it up. It was immaculate and the service was the same as any other customer even though they made no money on it. Pity they are in Derby, my local Smart dealer in Glasgow thought I was dreaming getting a car this cheap.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

It has its limitations, of course but it is an event every time you drive it. The gearbox is a little jerky and can be caught out but you can adapt and make the car a suprisingly capable machine. The gearing allows excellent economy but also spirited acceleration in the right gear. I was surprised at the zip available.

    What's it like to park?

Even without Power Steering mine is a doddle and can find spaces that make town driving unbelievably easy.

  • Living with it

    5 out of 5 5.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Nothing at all, I've only done 2000 miles since I got it but it feels, mechanically well built and as its engine is a Mercedes built unit I don't expect any issues. Most surveys say the same.

What's most practical about your car?

Suprisingly spacious. The boot is able to accommodate more than you would think. The split boot is a real bonus. They have endeavoured to make it as practical as the design would allow; it certainly achieves the aim. Despite its size it is a very safe car which most people find odd but the crash tests don't lie.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Its a basic model but still comes with Electric windows and Central locking. I am reluctant to spend to much on it from the accessories catalogue as it is a workhorse but I have put Smart wheel trims on it, a parcel shelf and Smart mats.
