No Euro NCAP crash-test, but Smart has raided Mercedes-Benz’ parts bin for the best stability and body control programmes – ESP stability control and ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution are standard. There are two airbags, too and the body incorporates a strong safety cell to protect in an accident. Side airbags are optional on the standard model, but standard on the Brabus.

Immobiliser and remote central locking are standard. The Coupe gets a hard top as standard for extra security plus alarm and immobiliser.

The rear boot is so shallow it limits what you could put in it. Think a few items of clothing – shopping bags are a no-no. Front storage is better – there’s enough room for a couple’s weekly shop. Inside, there’s a small glovebox, a cupholder and a few small door bins. It’s probably best to have a second, more practical car, as a back-up.
