Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 35 - 62 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Although large family cars depreciate quite heavily, the Avensis is one of the better performers in the class. The 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel are very fuel efficient and offer low road tax charges. Toyota has also worked to reduce servicing times for the Avensis compared with the previous model which will help keep labour charges down while the car is at the garage.

The best performing engine is the 2.0 D-4D which in TR specification has lower emissions than some bespoke eco-friendly models from alternatives manufacturers. The 1.6-litre petrol engine also offers low emissions given its 130bhp output.

Previous versions of the Avensis have been among the most dependable cars on our roads. Very few problems are reported.
