Used car buying: Toyota Aygo hatchback trim and equipment

Used Toyota Aygo buying guide

For a small car the Aygo was decently equipped, especially if you headed up the range where all sorts of convenience features were thrown in. Things started with the standard Aygo trim which, for £6795 (five-door models were just £200 more), included a two-speaker CD player, anti-lock brakes and a rear wiper.

Another £500 secured the Aygo+ which boasted two extra speakers for the stereo, along with niceties such as remote central locking, electric front windows, side airbags and a choice of snazzier paint colours. The top spot in the launch range was reserved for the £7745 Sport, which added a rev counter mounted in a separate pod, alloy wheels and front fog lamps.

There were plenty of cost options available, including metallic paint for £325 and manual air-conditioning for a reasonable £500, along with a Nav Pack with a portable TomTom navigation unit. Buyers could also opt for the rather more unconventional Travel Pack, which included a Samsonite glovebox bag, a trolley bag and a rucksack.

What followed over the years were a slightly baffling raft of special editions, including the Platinum that arrived in December 2007 (it was deleted in January 2009 but reappeared in June that year as the top-of-the-range model) featuring Platinum Crystal Silver paint, six airbag, and a six-speaker stereo.

The Aygo Go arrived in January 2011 with a detachable TomTom navigation unit, plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity and rear privacy glass, then the Fire and Ice models in February 2012.

Also worth seeking out are the models badged Blue or Black, which came with air-conditioning, alloys and part-leather trim amongst other goodies. Today, there’s little difference between them in used values, so there’s no reason not to go for an example with plenty of toys.

Last, it’s worth noting that ESP stability control wasn’t standard and Toyota actually dropped it as an option for a time, so it’s a bonus if the car you’re looking at is so equipped.

Equipment summary

When Toyota launched the Aygo in 2005, it offered T2 and T3 trim levels. The T2 came with twin front airbags and a CD stereo, while the T3 upped this to include electric front windows, remote central locking, keyless entry and a 50/50 split and fold rear seat. Sport models offer alloy wheels, front fog lights and a rev counter mounted on the dash.

The Aygo+ and Black models then arrived with side airbags, ESP and air conditioning, while the Aygo Blue has Bluetooth connection and a unique paint colour.

  • The Sport was dropped in mid-2007 but the Platinum model was added with Bluetooth, air con and leather gear knob.
  • A revised Aygo range in 2009 offered Aygo+, Blue and Black models, with the Black finished with 14-inch alloy wheels and Alcantara and leather upholstery.
  • At the start of 2011, Toyota introduced the Aygo Go! with TomTom sat-nav, Bluetooth and a USB connection for MP3 players.
  • The Go! also has rear privacy glass and alloy wheels. For 2012, the Aygo range was refined to the basic model, Aygo+ and Ice and Fire models.

Standard Toyota Aygo equipment

The entry level Aygo has power steering, twin front airbags, CD stereo with MP3 connection and a folding one-piece rear seat. It’s a very Spartan model, so better to upgrade to the Aygo+ that comes with central locking, electric front windows and side airbags.

The Aygo Fire comes in Burnt Orange paint and has a colour-coded speedo surround and leather steering wheel and gear shift knob, along with alloy wheels and rear privacy glass.

Go for the Ice trim and you get air conditioning, Alcantara upholstery, iPod connection and Bluetooth.

Toyota Aygo accessories

For the basic Aygo, electric front windows and Bluetooth come as part of an options pack, but air conditioning is not available.

The Aygo+ can have air con added, while metallic paint and Bluetooth are also options worth considering. Alloy wheels are standard on the Fire model but are an option for the rest of the Aygo range, while all can have a roof rack fitted to aid practicality.

Toyota Aygo facelift in 2013

The equipment levels changed in 2013 and now buyers can choose between Active, Active Plus, Mode and Move trims.

At the bottom of the range, Active cars now get stability control, curtain airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounting points and 50:50 folding rear seats.

Active Plus nets you electric front windows, remote central locking, rear head restraints and body-coloured exterior door handles.

Progress up to the Mode and you'll enjoy 14-inch eight-spoke 'Ragno' alloy wheels, front fog lights, LED daytime running lights, rear privacy glass and a rev counter.

Opt for the range-topping Aygo Move and you'll also benefit from a portable TomTom sat-nav with integral Bluetooth and MP3 connection, air conditioning, rev counter and a leather steering wheel and gear knob. An optional 'Style' pack for the Move includes six-spoke alloy wheels, LED day running lights and rear privacy glass.

Safety

3 out of 5 3.0

Like its sister car the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo safety has been given a three-star rating by Euro NCAP.

Like the C1, the driver’s passenger compartment was described by Euro NCAP as remaining stable in front impact tests although there is some risk of the driver’s chest striking the steering wheel.

All Aygo models have ABS with electronic brake force distribution along with twin airbags. Side and thorax airbags became standard on all variants from July 2013. Previously, higher-spec models only added the side airbags and curtain airbags optional on Aygo+ and Sport models.

There is a light and buzzer seatbelt warning system on all models. All but entry-level cars feature remote central locking while front seatbelts feature pre-tensioners and there is a passenger airbag cut-off switch. Special attention has also been given to pedestrian protection in a crash with extra impact-absorbing structures. The Aygo scored 53% for pedestrian protection in Euro NCAP tests.

Interior & boot space

3 out of 5 3.0

Despite its compact dimensions, the Aygo has good passenger space, however its big weak point is the tiny boot. With just 139 litres of space and a high boot lip it is only really ideal for a few shopping bags and even small suitcases may struggle to fit. However Toyota does offer a glovebox lid for the open-fronted cubby to make it more usable and secure.

Other compartments around the cabin including trays and cupholders add another 25 litres of storage while all but the most basic Aygo models have a 50/50 split rear bench which helps reach a compromise between extra luggage space and carrying passengers.
