What are the running costs?

One of the primary reasons for buying a car like the Aygo is often the comparatively minuscule running costs. With low tax, insurance and repair costs, it’s one of the cheapest forms of four-wheeled motoring around.

There’s only one engine available in the Aygo, yet claimed fuel economy figures do vary depending on whether you opt for a manual or automatic gearbox. The former has a claimed 53.3-57.6mpg fuel return on the WLTP cycle, with that figure dropping slightly for the latter to 51.3-54.3mpg.

Fuel tank capacity is typically small for this size of car at 35 litres.

While there are no electric or hybrid models on offer, the Aygo’s fuel-sipping three-cylinder petrol means claimed emissions reach 111-120g/km of CO2 for the manual and up to 118-124g/km for the X-shift automatic.

Servicing and warranty

All Aygos come with a three-year warranty, but this can be extended to as much as 10 years or 100,000 miles if you service your car at a Toyota dealer. Aside from that there’s a 12-year, unlimited mileage corrosion warranty, along with a three-year rust and paint warranty.

Servicing is cheap in the Aygo anyway, but Toyota offers fixed-price service plans that can be paid ahead of time or in monthly instalments, so you can plan your costs.

Reliability

Despite being small and light, the Aygo’s build quality is impressive and backed up by a great warranty. There have been a couple of recalls in the car’s lifespan, the first being for an issue with the steering column and the second relating to problems with the wall thickness of the fuel tank – although this only affected three vehicles.
