Toyota has announced a new top-level trim specification for its Proace City small van – and confirmed a new, more powerful engine option for 2022.

The new Toyota Proace City Design includes a number of safety features that have been missing from the range since it was introduced, while the addition of a 130hp engine option boosts performance.

What’s included with the new Toyota Proace City Design

The Design trim level is the new range-topper. Extra items of standard kit include 16-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, satellite-navigation and an alarm.

More significantly, you also get pre-collision assist, a lane-departure warning system, road-sign recognition and driver fatigue alert – all helping to make this small van safer.

The full Proace City line-up is now: Active, Icon and Design – though only the Icon is available with the longer L2 body as well as the standard L1 version.

And the new engine range?

Previously available with 75hp and 100hp 1.5-litre turbodiesel engines, for now Toyota is only selling 100hp models.

In Spring 2022, the Design trim will also be available with a 130hp version of the 1.5-litre engine, and with an automatic transmission in place of the standard manual gearbox. This should make an already pleasant driving experience even better, and ensure the Proace City is able to easily cope with even its highest payload ratings.

The 75hp engine has been permanently dropped.

An all-electric van with 136hp is set to join the range before the end of the 2021 as well.

What does the Proace City Design cost?

Prices for the new Design 100hp model start at £23,384, on-the-road but excluding VAT. The 130hp variant will start at £24,259 once it becomes available.

Meanwhile, a 100hp entry-level Proace City Active is £19,718, the Icon L1 £21,468 and the Icon L2 £22,093.

As with all Toyota Professional commercial vehicles, the Proace City comes with a standard three-year / 100,000-mile warranty that can be extended up to 10 years at no extra cost as long as the van is serviced on schedule by Toyota.
