Update (August 2015): 2015 Mitsubishi L200 review
The 2015 Mitsubishi L200 is one of six new pickups to be introduced over the next 18 months. The Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok both set to receive mid-life facelifts, the next-generation Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux are rumoured to be launched and Fiat looks set to unveil an all new pickup for 2016, along with Renault.
The Mitsubishi L200 has been a top seller in the pickup market since the third generation was launched in 1997. However the current generation, which was launched in 2006, is really starting to look its age.
That’s all about to change though with a new L200 set for UK launch in the summer next year and here we’re taking a first look at the new model. From 2016, badge engineered versions of the Mitsubishi L200 will form the base of the new pickup from Fiat Professional.
Engine
Under the bonnet of the L200’s in Asia, where it has already been launched as the Triton, is a new 2.4-litre turbodiesel unit which we imagine will be arriving in the UK too. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which is almost certainly to feature in European models as the current five-speed receives a lot of criticism. A five-speed automatic transmission is also available.
Dimensions
The new model looks more imposing, and that’s because it is. It is now 70mm longer (5280mm), 15mm wider (1815mm), but has the same height (1780mm) and same wheelbase (3000mm) as the current generation. Most of the extra length will go to the load bed, which is between 15mm and 45mm longer.
The 205mm ground clearance may be better than the Volkswagen Amarok, but it falls short of many of the category’s heavyweights, like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
UK Sales
The new Mitsubishi L200 is expected to arrive into dealerships in late summer. No prices will be given until closer to the launch date, or if the L200 will retain the impressive 5 year, 125,000 mile warranty.
