Don’t be confused - you haven’t gone back to 1972; the Vauxhall Viva is a small and tall hatchback city car that offers an alternative to the Citroen C1, Suzuki Celerio, MG 3 and Toyota Aygo. You’ll find hundreds of used Vauxhall Vivas for sale on Parkers, and some good deals on nearly-new Vivas too. Far from the 1960s-70s original Viva, which was a small rear-wheel drive saloon and estate, the new Viva is a front-wheel drive, five-door family car with a small footprint and small price. There’s not a lot of variation in the range, which relies on a three-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine producing 73-75hp. Sharing technology with Suzuki, this is a characterful and economical car with a rather budget-feeling interior that nevertheless, has room for five and even an automatic option. For more attitude, Vauxhall offers the Viva Rocks - with off-road looks and added ground clearance, it’s an effective visual upgrade, but we’d recommend going for the regular Viva SL instead, which adds dual-zone climate control and nicer trim.
