- Good but not outstanding fuel economy
- VW servicing not the cheapest but long intervals
- Good resale values mean low finance costs
The Arteon’s claimed fuel economy ranges from a low of 38.7mpg for the 280hp petrol to 62.8mpg for the 150hp diesel.
Remember that the most powerful models features efficiency-sapping four-wheel drive – which can be specified on the 190hp diesel, too – so avoid these if you’re after maximum economy and lowest running costs.
Volkswagen Arteon servicing costs
UK servicing costs are still to be confirmed at the time of writing, but minor service (oil change) intervals for the Arteon are up to 18,000 miles or two years, with the first full inspection due at three years or 36,000 miles.
Other Volkswagen Arteon running costs
Tax and insurance should be at least on par with equivalent rivals – with insurance costs helped by all the available active safety tech.
Strong residual values and list prices that undercut some of the upmarket competition mean that monthly payments for those taking PCP finance are impressively low.
While the VW badge may not have the cachet of Mercedes or BMW equivalents, in most cases finance costs are lower with the Arteon than the alternatives – meaning that you’ll spend less each month with the Volkswagen.
Claimed fuel economy tops 60mpg in the 150hp diesel and drops to just below 40mpg in the 280hp petrol. These mean that trips to fill up shouldn’t be too frequent, though you should be able to cut your fuel costs with Audi, BMW and Mercedes alternatives to name a few.
Estimated fuel cost per year
|Fuel type||Pence per litre||Estimated cost per year *|
|Unleaded||116p||£977 - £1,388 *|
|Diesel||118p||£825 - £1,141 *|
* The estimated fuel cost figure is based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles and is a guide to how much this model will cost in fuel each year. It's calculated using the model's average MPG (calculated from both town centre and motorway driving) and the average fuel price from around the country. Actual fuel costs will vary based on driving style and road conditions.
Ongoing running costs
|Servicing period||The Arteon is available with both fixed and variable service intervals, with the former recommended for cars that do fewer than 10,000 miles per year|
|Warranty||All Volkswagens come with a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty, and the Arteon is no exception|
|Road tax (12 months)||£140|

How much is it to insure?
Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered before 01 March 2001 it is based on engine size. For cars registered on or after 01 March 2001 the VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions.
While the VW Arteon’s CO2 emissions don’t stoop to exceptionally low levels, the 164g/km max from the four-wheel drive 280hp petrol is respectable. The 240hp four-wheel drive diesel achieves a claimed 152g/km.
Company car drivers will want to consider the 150hp diesel, which emits 116g/km in automatic form. The 1.5-litre petrol model may also be worth considering as the lower list prices could balance out the higher CO2 emissions in terms of BIK tax charges.
Harmful NOx emissions are kept at bay in the diesel though the use of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. To maintain this you’ll need to keep the 13-litre AdBlue tank topped up, increasing costs – VW predicts the AdBlue will need replenishing every 9,000 miles, although consumption will vary with usage and driving style.
Highest and lowest CO2 emissions
|Engine||CO2 emissions||Road tax (12 months)|
|2.0 TDi (150ps) Diesel||112 g/km (Min)||£140|
|2.0 TSi (280ps) Petrol||164 g/km (Max)||£140|
- Based on proven VW Group technology
- Four-wheel drive and DSG add complexity
- No reason for any concern at this stage
It’s hard to judge the VW Arteon’s reliability at the time of writing, because it has only just been launched onto the market.
However, it uses a lot of well-established Volkswagen Group technologies – including the engines and MQB platform underpinnings – and we’re yet to hear of any real horror stories regarding these. The famous Dieselgate scandal significantly pre-dates the Arteon and is unlikely to be an issue here.
