The diesels are more popular than the 1.6-litre petrol and the 1.9 TDI is the most common model overall. It's also very economical which means it's a good choice if you're keeping an eye on costs. The S is fairly well equipped but it's worth aiming for an SE which gets key extras such as alloy wheels, cruise control and a trip computer.
The Golf is a very popular used buy and a more practical version won't be any harder to sell. Buyers of Volkswagens expect good quality though, so the best money will be paid for those that are well looked after - both inside and out.
