Equipment

4 out of 5 4.0

The decision to keep the trim line-up the same and limited to just three choices – buyers can pick S, SE and Sport – keeps things simple and easy to follow. S models come with 16-inch alloys, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, daytime running lights, air-conditioning, glovebox cooling, six-way driver’s seat adjustment, all-round electric windows and aux-in port for MP3 players. SE versions come with eight-way adjustment, centre armrest with storage in the front, radio-CD system and front and rear parking sensors. Sports models add 17-inch alloys, front fog lights, static cornering lights, sport seats, automatic climate control and usefully heated windscreen washer nozzles making it easier to clean the windscreen when it gets colder. As is now common on most Volkswagen models the options list is extensive and can soon push up the price of the car.

Summer 2013 saw the intoduction of the Jetta Limited Edition, based on the existing SE model. For a £160 price premium new, the Limited Edition had £2,900 worth of extra equipment, including 'RNS 315' touchscreen satnav, front fog lights, parking sensors front and rear, tinted glass, 16 inch 'Perth' alloy wheels and a Convenience Pack which includes auto-dimming rear view mirror, electrically folding door mirrors with puddle lights and automatic lights and wipers. Available with a choice of Deep Black Pearl, Reflex Silver or Platinum Grey metallic paint, all 450 Limited Editions were equipped with the 1.6-litre TDI with 104bhp.

Safety

4 out of 5 4.0

Despite being lighter than the previous model, Volkswagen claims that this version is actually safer, although it hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP. Buyers get six airbags as standard including driver and front passenger, side airbags in the front and curtain airbags in the front and rear. Stability control is standard and comes with trailer stabilisation and counter-steering support which helps to keep the car in a straight line when breaking heavily.

It also gets ABS, anti-slip regulation (ASR) and electronic locking differential (EDS).

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Volkswagen Jetta (11-18) was tested by Euro NCAP in 2011 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2011
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 94%
Child Occupant: 86%
Pedestrian: 56%
Safety Assist: 71%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.

Interior & boot space

4.5 out of 5 4.5

Despite the boot space being slightly smaller than its predecessor at 510 litres (the previous generation Jetta had 527 litres), it still has a huge amount of load-lugging space and is only 55 litres off the Passat Saloon. Bearing this in mind the Jetta makes absolute sense as a cheaper alternative to the larger saloon. The rear seats split 60:40 to make things even more practical.

However, the centre seat belt is attached to a bar behind the rear seats. This means it can’t be moved and could get in the way of larger items that you try to place in the back. As before there is plenty of stowage space available with generously sized door pockets and decent sized storage in the armrest in the front.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Volkswagen Jetta (11-18) compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Skoda Octavia Hatchback (04-12) 560 litres
Volkswagen Jetta (11-18) 510 litres
Renault Megane Hatchback (08-16) 372 litres
Volvo S40 (04-12) 325 litres
