Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 28 - 56 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

The Volkswagen Tiguan running costs aren’t too ruinous. It holds its value as well as other upmarket small off-roaders like the Honda CR-V, but servicing and parts may be more expensive when compared to these alternatives. Insurance should be affordable though with a group 9 rating (group 11 for the 2.0 TDI 170 models) while economy is good across the range - the 2.0-litre diesel is capable of around 40mpg - a respectable figure for a small 4x4.

The Volkswagen Tiguan emissions are reasonably good when compared with other small 4x4s and there are Bluemotion Technology versions available - although these are two-wheel drive models. The 2.0 TDI 140 BlueMotion Technology variant emits 139g/km of CO2 and is capable of an impressive average fuel economy of 53.3mpg.

The Tiguan uses components from the Golf, with other parts coming the Passat, Phaeton and Touareg – all proven models.

There has been one notable blemish on the Volkswagen Tiguan reliability record in late 2013, when a recall was issued to replace fuses for the lighting circuit. The recall affected models built between 2008 and mid-2011, over concerns that a fuse could trip and cause the lighting system to partially fail. The problem is rectified by swapping the fuse for a different type with a tougher surface coating.
