If you’re not keen on parking you can specify the Park Assist system which will steer the car into a bay for you.

Thinking of towing a caravan or trailer? The optional Trailer Assist system is available for the first time in the Touran which can automatically park the car for you with a trailer attached.

When you go shopping you will no longer need to worry about fishing out your keys out of your pocket or handbag if you opt for the keyless entry and start system and you can also opt for the boot to be automatically opened by waving your foot under the bumper.

Other useful options for families include a Cam Connect system which gives you the ability to fix a Go Pro camera in the car which will then display on the touchscreen enabling you to check what the kids are up to without turning around in your seat.

Electronic voice amplification will make it easier to communicate with the second and third row too via the in-car speakers and microphone. A new three-zone climate control system with enhanced air filtering is also available.

Safety

4.8 out of 5 4.8
  • Huge amount of standard safety kit
  • Lots of modern driver assistance tech too
  • Scored five stars at Euro NCAP testing

VW Touran: how many Isofix points does it have?

As this car is targeted specifically at families it will come as little surprise that the new generation Touran comes loaded with safety kit for optimum protection. It scored the maximum five stars during Euro NCAP crash testing.

As well as featuring up to nine airbags and five Isofix points, the new Touran also uses new high-strength steel which has been optimised for crash situations.

Depending on the trim you decide to buy there’s a wealth of driver assistance systems available, some of which make their debut in the new Touran like the Automatic Post-Collision braking system, which automatically slows the car down if it’s involved in an accident to prevent a secondary collision.

Available as standard there is a Pre-Crash proactive occupant protection system which automatically tightens seats belts, and closes the windows and panoramic sunroof if the system detects a possible collision.

Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, available as standard from SE, warns you if you’re getting too close to the car in front. If ignored the system will send a warning jolt through the steering wheel, and if not enough braking is applied, the car will intervene and automatically brake.

Side Assist uses a blindspot monitoring system to detect if it’s unsafe to pull out of lane while the Rear Traffic Alert system uses radar based sensors to detect if anything is approaching if you’re reversing out of a parking space and vision is limited.

If you’re planning on doing any towing in your Touran, Trailer Assist is also available for the first time which can automatically park the car for you.

Other kit like a tyre pressure monitoring system, automatic hazard lights during full braking, parking sensors and a speed limiter are available across the range too.

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Volkswagen Touran was tested by Euro NCAP in 2015 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2015
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 88%
Child Occupant: 89%
Pedestrian: 71%
Safety Assist: 76%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.

Interior & boot space

4.8 out of 5 4.8
  • Seven seats, but rear ones aren’t huge
  • Many practical touches around the car
  • Easy to park, even with a trailer

VW Touran: will my family fit?

The Touran is loaded with features which will make life with the family easier and there are up to 47 cubbies and storage solutions on offer so you’ll always be able to find somewhere to store your personal items on the move.

A key feature for the Touran is the ability to fit a Go Pro camera in the car which can be displayed on the multimedia touchscreen so you can see what’s happening in the back at all times without having to turn around while driving.

To keep the kids entertained you can also specify a Travel and Comfort system which gives you the base to place tablets behind the front seat headrests so the children can watch films while on the move.

One other useful feature is the electronic voice amplification which means the driver can communicate easily with the second and third row occupants by using the cars in-car microphones and speaker systems.

VW Touran: will it fit in my garage?

In general the Touran is easy to park thanks to excellent visibility for the driver.

It’s made easier if you opt for the parking sensors and Park Assist systems available as standard on higher trims and if you’re planning on towing a caravan or trailer, we’d thoroughly recommend the Trailer Assist system to make manoeuvring into parking spaces much easier.

If it is equipped with keyless entry and an electric tailgate then you can also open the boot with your foot by waving it under the bumper.
