Parkers overall rating: 4.3 out of 5 4.3
  • Exceptional passenger space
  • Plenty of clever storage solutions
  • Boot not quite the biggest in class

One of the XC40’s strongest suits, interior space is exceptional. Up front there’s bags of room for even the largest occupants, with the cabin boasting a light and airy feel. Passengers in the back will also be pleased with the amount of space on offer, especially with the usually headroom-sapping optional panoramic sunroof in place.

Leg and knee room are a particular highlight and impress even when the front seats are set far back. The middle seat is a decent size, however the chunky transmission tunnel running down the middle of the car robs legroom.

All-round storage space is class-leading with plenty of clever, well thought-out solutions. For example, the pull-out trays under the front seats are big enough for a large tablet, there’s a foldaway hook under the glovebox for hanging shopping and slots next to the steering wheel for storing credit cards.

The door pockets are also huge, thanks to the bass speakers being relocated onto the dashboard as part of Volvo’s ‘air-powered’ subwoofer.

Is it easy to park?

The XC40 comes as standard with rear parking sensors, however we’d recommend optioning at least the front parking sensors. If you can afford it, the 360-degree surround view camera is another useful addition, giving a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings – handy for parking in tight spots.

All-round visibility is on a par for the class, however thanks to the XC40’s unusually styled C-pillar the rear three-quarter blindspot is exceptionally large.

Volvo XC40 2017 boot

The XC40’s boot is large, if not class leading – the BMW X1 holds that honour. Loading luggage is made easier by the dual height boot floor that can be moved flush with the loading lip, or folded back to enable access to deep underfloor storage areas - perfect for stopping smaller bags from rolling around the boot. The boot floor can also be sat in an upright position with two hooks from which to hang shopping bags.

Folding the rear seats down completely flat is an easy task and can be done at the flick of a switch. Wide objects are also catered for, with a well-shaped boot opening free of intrusions from the rear light cluster or wheel arches.

Safety

  • Volvo well-known for outstanding safety
  • XC40 boasts a raft of clever safety kit
  • Awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating

Volvo has a reputation for building exceptionally safe road cars and, on the face of it, the XC40 is no different. Boasting a vast suite of active safety kit designed to avoid accidents and protect occupants in the event of one, it was no surprise that the XC40 achieved a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP when it was tested in summer 2018.

Standard safety equipment includes:

  • City Safety pack – capable of detecting vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, and automatically applying the brakes if it detects a potential accident
  • Oncoming Lane Mitigation – automatically guides the car back into lane if the driver inadvertently allows the vehicle to stray into oncoming traffic
  • Driver Alert Control – detects if the vehicle is being driven erratically and warns the driver to take a break accordingly
  • Run-off Road Mitigation – detects if the vehicle is about to veer off the road and adjusts the steering and brakes accordingly
  • Run-off Road Protection – if the vehicle is about to leave the road and the car detects that the situation is unavoidable, it will prime the XC40 for an accident by tightening the seat belts and activating energy-absorbing tech mitigate potential injury
  • Road Sign Information – identifies and displays oncoming road sign information on the car’s digital dashboard display
  • Speed Limiter – allows the driver to set the vehicle’s maximum speed (can be overridden if the accelerator is depressed fully
  • Lane Keeping Aid – keeps the car in lane by gently activating the steering

Optional safety equipment includes:

  • IntelliSafe Assist – includes adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist (the latter keeps the car a set distance from the car in front and controls the steering to keep the car in lane)
  • IntelliSafe Surround – includes blindspot monitoring, Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Collision Warning (applies the car’s brakes if a collision from behind is deemed to be imminent)

Driver-assistance tech reviewed

The XC40's autonomous driving features - in particular Pilot Assist - need further honing for UK roads. We found it holds the car too far over to the left-hand side of the lane on a motorway, and can become flustered with sliproads, not knowing whether it should be turning off or not with no driver input.

Furthermore we've had instances where the car's automatic emergency braking has activated as it confuses a parked car on the roadside with a stationary vehicle in the Volvo's way.

As part of a wider scheme to reduce the chance of fatalities in its cars, Volvo will limit the top speed of its cars to 112mph, and the XC40 will be one of them.

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Volvo XC40 SUV was tested by Euro NCAP in 2018 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2018
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 97%
Child Occupant: 87%
Pedestrian: 71%
Safety Assist: 76%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
