Engines and motors

Peugeot keeps things exceedingly simple with only one motor and battery on offer. The 154hp motor and 52kWh battery give a 0-62mph time of 9.8-seconds, around two seconds slower than most rivals.

In most situations it’s adequate, although overtaking on an A-road requires a bit more planning than rivals. However, while the performance is fine in terms of family hatchback terms, it feels sluggish compared to almost all rivals. Even the closely related Astra Electric is slightly quicker.

What’s it like to drive?

  • Comfortable ride
  • Predictable handling
  • Quiet

Given the leisurely acceleration, Peugeot has been wise to chase comfort rather than cornering prowess in the E-308. It’s not the full magic carpet, the suspension has to be stiff enough to deal with 1700kg after all, but it rounds off craggy urban roads well and has a relaxed gait over undulating roads without ever feeling uncontrolled and floaty.

The quick and overly heavy steering feels at odds with this easy-going ride, especially as the E-308 isn’t a huge amount of fun. There’s too much weight and stickiness around the straight ahead before the steering suddenly gets much faster, while grip levels are fine but not great.

Body roll isn’t too pronounced, and if you push a little too hard the E-308 generally pushes predictably wide at the front. A lift of the throttle brings the nose back into line, with the ESC preventing it getting lairy even when provoked. Overall, it’s one of the more comfortable cars in its class, but you’ll have a lot more fun in an MG4 EV

You’re far better to drive in a sensible fashion, conserving energy, enjoying the supple ride and plush interior. Do this and the E-308 is a pleasant thing to spend an hour or two in.

Lead with three bullet points, answering basic questions – how does it go round corners, what is the steering like and is it easy to drive?
