  • Acceptable rather than outstanding rear space
  • Boot on the small side of average
  • Plenty of useful cubbies

How much space is there?

You’ll find plenty of space up front in the E-308. The seat goes back a long way to accommodate tall drivers, there’s plenty of room between the front seats and headroom is fine.

There’s less rear space than you’d get in an ID.3 or BYD Dolphin, with head and legroom that’s acceptable rather than generous. It means you’ll be pushing the front passenger seat quite a long way forwards if you’ve got an Isofix child’s seat to fit.

With lots of black trim, thick pillars and heavy window tints on higher models, the rear feels a little more claustrophobic than it is. A panoramic roof helps a little, but the estate’s higher roofline improves things more.

Boot space and storage

Although petrol and diesel versions of the 308 have one of the biggest boots in their class, the E-308 has a smaller 361-litre boot, just like the plug-in hybrid. There’s no frunk and precious little in the way of underfloor storage, too.

There is a small spot you could attempt to put the Type 2 cable in, but you’d have to wrap it very carefully, and who’s got time for that? The boot itself is a decently square shape with a bit of a loading lip, but it’s nowhere near as bad as the Renault Megane E-Tech

If you need more space, the rear backrests fold in a 60/40 split with a ski flap. This brings total capacity to 1,271 litres.

Is it easy to park?

The E-308 isn’t a particularly big car, so even ignoring the parking assistance features you should be fine. Allure Premium models give you all you really need with front and rear parking sensors plus a 180-degree reversing camera.

The range-topping 308 GT Premium model features a 360-degree parking camera and a semi-autonomous parking function that can navigate the car into end-on and parallel spaces. It also gets a function that automatically dips the door mirrors when the car is in reverse to help you avoid kerbing the alloy wheels.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP hasn’t tested the E-308
  • ICE and PHEV versions get four stars
  • Decent standard safety kit

Although Euro NCAP has tested the regular Peugeot 308, it doesn’t list the E-308 as a variant that’s included for these results. Let’s hope when it is tested it performs better than the ICE and PHEV’s four-star result, behind the far cheaper MG4 which managed five stars.

You do get plenty of safety kit including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, cruise control, a speed limiter and a traffic sign recognition system. There are eight airbags dotted around the cabin and two Isofix points for the rear seats. You don’t get an Isofix point for the passenger seat, though.

Opt for GT trim and you also gain semi-autonomous parking and lane positioning assist to help take the strain out of motorway miles.
