Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 30 - 62 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Depreciation is the biggest burden with the Vauxhall, however if you’re buying new it’s pretty much in line with other cars in this class. All of the engines are economical for the performance they deliver (especially the diesels) and insurance is very reasonable while Vauxhall servicing costs are generally competitive.

The Astra is an environmentally friendly choice for green buyers. With an average of 164g/km CO2 across the range, its emissions are relatively low for a medium-sized hatchback. Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 1.7 CDTi ecoFLEX model, which is one of the greenest models in the range. The range is also fairly economical, averaging 43mpg.

A few minor problems are taking the shine off what is otherwise an excellent car and some owners have reported gearbox problems and electrical faults.
