Fuel economy
A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test.
Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 26 - 59 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

It will be comparatively expensive to buy and some parts can be rather costly too, but a good one won’t lose much money. Diesels in particular are very economical. VR6 will struggle to see 30 mpg. Service intervals are long, whilst insurance intervals are average.
Expect few problems if servicing is carried out as stipulated most owners are very impressed with the reliability of their Golfs. GTi 16v and VR6 tend to be driven hard and will suffer if maintenance has been neglected.
