Volvo 240 Saloon 2.0 GL 4d Auto (85) (1988/E) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Executive motoring for family car costs.
Costs
Drinks petrol on short trips but 30+ on longer runs, apart from a basis service each year no other costs, oh yes a bulb and a couple of fuses!
-
On the road
Driving
Feels very safe and secure on the road, excellent in snow or icy conditions, lots of wallowing in corners but never feels like there is a problem.
Performance
Its a 2 tonne, 2.0lt automatic Volvo - this section should be called progress not performance. On the motorway you will love it though!

Living with it
Reliability
Bugger VW, there is NOTHING more reliable in life than an '88 Volvo 240
Image
I thought long and hard over this one and in the end just started humming John Lennons song!
Comfort
Wake me up when we get there! Warm, cosseted, comfortable. I still look forward to getting into this car every morning. Loads of room, riding in the back actually makes you feel important!

Security and Service
Security
Good locks, but then who would nick a automatic Volvo saloon?
Service
Volvo dealers are over-priced and crap - mine was running rough when first bought but the dealer said there was nothing wrong with it - my friendly local garage took 2 minutes to identify a leak on the inlet manifold and £30 later it was as sweet as a nut
