Volvo 740 Estate 2.0 GL 5d (1987/E) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Cost me £1 per KG of car.
Costs
Scrapyards are your best friends to save main dealer prices.
-
On the road
Driving
Handles like it looks, but rides well and demolishes motorway mileages with aplomb.
Performance
121PS is just about OK. The engine pulls well even if peak torque takes an age to get to. 4800rpm! Has seen 115mph on the Autobahn in Germany. Can be thirsty if pushed on.

Living with it
Reliability
3 months, 7000 miles, started every time on the button. Towed 1500kg without moaning. Absolutely awesome. Now exported to Switzerland and passed stricter Swiss MOT with only adjustments to headlights needed!
Image
Better here in Switzerland than the UK. Still used as taxis. The X5/XC90 of its day.
Comfort
Can leave the car feeling fresh after 10 hours of motoring across Europe.

Security and Service
Security
Aftermarket alarm and living in a low crime area helps. But you would be mad to steal one.
Service
Excellent in UK and Switzerland.
