A born performer
In the engine bay is Toyota’s renowned 2.5-litre D-4D engine, which also features in the Hiace and Land Cruiser, and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. It is tuned to 142bhp, which is the lower of the two power outputs, and can achieve up to a respectable 36.0mpg on the combined cycle, but crucially for heavy duty operators, it can generate 343Nm of torque at just 2,000rpm.
Like most pick-up trucks, the Hilux will carry more than 1000kg in its load bay to ensure it is exempt from VAT for business users. The dimensions of the cargo area are greater than the outgoing Hilux and comparable with the new Nissan Navara.
The Hilux has a robust feeling interior and a finish more typical of that found in one of its passenger cars. It might not have the type of upmarket materials as found in the Avensis, but it’s built to the same standard, and features air conditioning, a CD player with USB and MP3 connectivity and remote control locking as standard.
