Clio owners ignore bonnet warning

  • Three-out-of five owners have ignored safety letters
  • 360,000 drivers at risk of 'serious personal injury'
  • Second letter sent to owners

The notice advises owners of second-generation Clios, manufactured between 1998 and 2005, and all Clio Campuses to get their bonnet mechanisms checked by authorised dealers, following numerous reports that the bonnet may open while the vehicle is moving.

However, Parker's has discovered through a Freedom of Information request to the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) that more than 360,000 owners out of the 565,000 contacted (64%) have failed to get their Clio checked by a dealer and could be at risk.

It is Renault’s second safety information letter in less than two years, with owners first contacted in April and May 2007 and again in August 2008. The second letter, sent by recorded delivery to Clio owners registered with the DVLA, warned drivers that there is “risk of damage to your vehicle and loss of visibility… there is a potential for serious personal injury.”

Safety concerns

The issue was first highlighted two years ago when the BBC programme Watchdog received over 1000 complaints that bonnets were opening while the car was being driven.

Users on Parker’s forum also reported bonnet problems with their Clios as early as 2004 and joined a petition to conduct an independent enquiry into the issue.

Renault claims that the problem is a result of improper maintenance from customers and that it has found no fault in the design or construction of the mechanism. The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) agrees.

But the customer manual for Clio models built between 1998 and 2005 didn’t contain any information that such maintenance should be carried out and owners received an amendment to their driver manuals in their latest letter from Renault reminding them how to maintain the mechanism and shut the bonnet safety catch correctly.

“The mailing is a reassurance campaign. Renault is a responsible manufacturer and takes the safety of its customers extremely serious,” the French manufacturer told Parker’s.

“Renault has investigated the cause of the incidents and worked with all the relevant authorities. No design or construction defect has been found.”

The company also explained that it has also produced an instructional video to show how to maintain the affected Clio and Campus models on its website.

VOSA said: “VOSA engineers in conjunction with Renault, carried out a thorough investigation into reports of inadvertent bonnet openings of Renault Clio Mk2 and Clio Campus models.

“This investigation found there was no design or construction defect with the bonnet latching mechanism. Instead it was determined that inadequate maintenance – through lack of cleaning and lubrication could lead to the latching mechanism failing to operate correctly.”

Much the same as the stories below, driving at 70mph on a motorway at 6 pm when bonnet flipps up,smashes windscreen, dents roof. Just manage to get on hard shoulder without getting killed. I have contacted Renault as I think they need to take responsibility and if not, it is a good time to go to the media with other manufactures also in the limelight I am sure they would readily pick up the Renault story. I don't see why I need to loose my no claims, pay access and get a hire car.

I was driving my 2001 clio down M5 southbound to Exeter at 10pm on Tuesday night at 65mph in the middle lane when the bonnet just flew up and smashed into my windscreen totally shattering it. Somehow managed to get my car to the hard shoulder without hitting anyone or being hit. Can't believe this happens so frequently. I am waiting to hear if my car will be written off. Had bonnet catch checked 2007 following recall letter, car was MOT'd 4 weeks ago, what's going on!!? Feel v lucky to be alive!

2 days ago this happened to my car too (53 plate clio) as my husband was driving it at 70mph. Bonnet flew open, smashed windscreen and dented the roof - very scary! Still waiting to hear from garage but it seems we can look forward to losing no claims and forking out for the excess. I bought the car 18 months ago from a used car dealer and was not told anything about this potential safety issue - there was nothing in with the paperwork/logbook either.

(cntd from last comment) managed to get us from the fast lane to the hard shoulder without impact to any other vehicle. When the RAC arrived they said this problem was a common fault even though we have never received any notification of this fault and the previous owner was her dad who bought it new. What would RENAULT do if they killed someone who fights for there country and there family due to there incompetence. Would renault reccommend a clio to there family?

We was looking forward to a nice weekend down in plymouth as i have a 7 month deployment to the somali basin to do anti-piracy. On the M6(N) my Fiance was overtaking an articulated lorry at 70 m.p.h whilst that was overtaking another vehicle when we was in the fast lane. Then in an instant the bonnet released hit the windscreen at speed smashing the windscreen the roof the rear view mirror flew off and so did interior lighting. Thanks to my fiance's quick thinking and calmness (cntd.....)

This happened to me on 12th November. Travelling on a busy dual carriageway in rush hour. Very frightening experience and still don't know how I managed to control the car and bring it to a stop safely. Never received a letter from Renault even though I bought my Clio nearly five years ago.

Bonnet flew up on my car Thursday 5th November - doing 60mph on the A3O and it flew up, bonnet ruined and roof caved in (windscreen ok) I had no clue this was a fault with clio's. The AA man explained to me the common fault. I bought the car last May and nothing was said by the previous owners. I have recieved no letter from DVLA - even when I registered myself as the new owner of the car with them. I am now concerned after reading these comments my insurance will not pay for it.

This happened to me on Saturday 17th October on M8 into Glasgow on outside lane. Motorway had to be closed by police to move car onto hard shoulder terrifying. Just been told by insurance today they will only repair windscreen as they say my car hasn't been maintained. Bonnet catch is part of MOT on car and was MOT'd in May and has been in garage for different things since then. Crash repair centre quoting £1400 to repair T Reg. Windscreen, bonnet & roof all knackered.

Just this morning when driving to uni, the bonnet on my daughters 02 Clio flew open on her, windscreen smashed, roof dented, and badly shaken. Happened on M8 outside lane during morning rush hour.Police had to close motorway to move car.
She didn't respond to letter this year when she bought the car, luckily only the car was damaged.

This happened to me on Friday (23.10.09) On the motorway going 70mph, rain pouring down, bonnet pops open smashes my windscreen. My roofs dented, windscreen wipers broken and bonnet ruined. I was extremely lucky. I'm suprised there hasn't been a more serious accident. I'm really angry about it. I've lost my no claims now.

I brought a Clio mark 2 last year and I received no information by the seller about renaults safety check(. If I knew about it I would have had the car checked out myself. However I got to know about the clio bonnet catch the hard way. I was driving on the motorway when the bonnet came up at about 65mph...My insurance refused to pay and Renault have said they are not liable. I have forked out nearly £700 on repairs to get the car back on the road, surely renault are part to blame..

I have owned a 2003 Clio for 4 years without incident, I am quite meticulous with routine servicing and lubrication of locks, hinges etc. My car had the bonnet latch mechanism changed FOC at the last service by Mitchells Renault in Lowestoft.
The majority of Clio's are probably second cars and therefore servicing is skimped or ignored. Poor or non existent servicing is the likely cause of many of these bonnet incidents!!

Just got back from collecting my wife and her Clio (2000 mfr) from an incident on a country road. The bonnet flew open at 50mph. The bonnet is damaged beyond repair, the windscreen has smashed and the roof panel is badly dented. Car could be a write off - we'll see what the insurers say tomorrow? Still - at least she is alive. Oh - and we don't appear to have had a letter - just found out about this problem from a friend who thinks they remembered it being reported on the TV.

'Renault claims that the problem is a result of improper maintenance from customers and that it has found no fault in the design or construction of the mechanism. What 'TOSH'. I have two clios in the family 2001 & 2002 models. Both have bonnet latch problems (coincidence?). 02 model fixed by removal/overhaul of mechanism; 01 model bonnet will not open unless one person pulls lever whilst another lifts bonnet. Renault will not admit it's a DESIGN fault. Another Design fault: CAR IMMOBILISER

When I went into the local dealer (Ness Motors, Perth) I was advised by the service receptionist, without anyone lokking at it, that it "would be alright" and that they would maybe take a look at it at its next service. Nonetheless I have kept it squirted with a decent aerosol lube. The car has since been in for a service and the bonnet only opens when I want it to!
