The compact hatchback segment is a competitive environment in the UK with the likes of the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra leading the way, but this hasn’t put off American car maker Chevrolet. The five-door Cruze hatchback is a big indication of the progress the company has made in quality and the brand will be hoping that its introduction will help give the Cruze range broader appeal.

It’s arguably more practical and offers a sportier look that the saloon version.

From launch three petrol engines and one diesel engine option were available. In Autumn 2013, a new petrol engine will be added to the range along with a greener diesel emitting 99g/km CO2.

The exterior has a look of a BMW 1 Series from the rear while the front of the car has a menacing presence with the two-tier grille. The Cruze competes on price with the Hyundai i30, the Kia c’eed and the Vauxhall Astra and is good value for money. Can the Cruze cut it with more established rivals? Read on to find out…

What owners say...

The car sits quite high (obviously not as high as an mpv), so access is quite easy. The rear seat is quite flat so easier to sit 1 person in the middle, and more comfortable.
