Chevrolet Camaro Convertible boot space, practicality and safety

2012 - 2015 (change model)
Practicality rating: 3 out of 53.0

The Camaro convertible should prove to be safe, if the worst happens. It gets a multitude of airbags as standard, seatbelt pretensioners, front and rear crush and crumple zones, lots of high-strength steel, a collapsible prop shaft and break-away pedals to minimise leg injury. The front head restraints are also padded to reduce the risk of head and neck injuries.

Buyers also get modern safety equipment such as stability control, ABS, traction control and electronic brake assistance. Further improving the Camaro’s safety are other features such as fast response LED tail lights. It’s yet to be crash tested but Chevrolet’s current range has an excellent reputation for safety, with many models receiving the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating.

Initial impressions might suggest that the Camaro’s too big for our roads. Despite its imposing presence, it’s only fractionally larger than a Ford Mondeo. Its wide stance, left-hand drive only configuration and low visibility with the roof up could prove too much for some, however. The roof, which is electric, takes around 30 seconds to fold up or down.

All you have to do to lower it is unlock the centre catch, and press a button. Boot space is a modest 328 litres with the roof up, shrinking to 287 litres with the roof down. The boot lip is also quite high off the ground, and the aperture narrow, so fitting things in can be tricky. There’s adequate storage space inside, with large door bins and a sensibly-sized glove box.

Some convertibles also struggle to keep their interiors warm with the roof down. The Camaro doesn’t, making it usable even on colder days. The rear seats, however, can prove problematic. With the front seats moved back, legroom is minimal. With the roof up, rear headroom can also be problematic.
