Audi’s new A1 could cost as little as £21 a month in company tax when sales start in May.

A combination of low pricing (from £13,145) and low emission engines means ultra-low benefit-in-kind tax bills for a base rate taxpayer.

The entry level A1, the 1.2 TFSI SE, is powered by an 86bhp turbocharged petrol engine that emits 119g/km of CO2. This puts it in the lowest 10% BIK tax band for the 2010/11 and 2011/12 tax years.

The cheapest diesel model, the 1.6 TDI SE with 105bhp, emits 102g/km of CO2, again qualifying it for the lowest 13% diesel BIK banding for the next two tax years. Company car tax for a 20% taxpayer will be £29 a month.

The low pricing does not come at the expense of standard equipment, though. All A1s come with alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric front windows, remote central locking, ESP stability control, and a CD/radio system.

Sport and S line versions are also being offered, as is a more powerful 1.4 TFSI petrol engine with 122bhp. This engine emits 126g/km, putting it in the 15% BIK band for the next two tax years.

The A1 will be pitched against the MINI range, where prices start at £12,750.
