Volkswagen has given its big 4x4, the Touareg, a thorough makeover and installed a host of new engines. It doesn't go on sale until June so, in the meantime, what are the five best 4x4s for company car drivers?

1. Nissan Qashqai

Okay, so the majority of Qashqais are front-wheel drive (4WD is on top-spec models) but it looks the part, and even more so now thanks to a recent facelift. A wide range of diesel engines (including the 129g/km of CO2 Pure Drive version) make it cost-effective, too, especially as prices start at £15,395.

2. Volvo XC60

Volvo's mid-size XC60 brings off-road ability and urban styling to the sector, as well as a raft of safety systems including City Safety, which mitigates accidents at low speeds. Of particular interest to company car drivers are the front-wheel-drive DRIVe versions that emit 159g/km of CO2.

3. Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen is a popular choice in the company car market thanks to competitive pricing and strong residual values, which translate into low wholelife costs. The Tiguan is no different, and brings sharp styling and a wide range of engines. The front-wheel drive BlueMotion Tech versions make the most sense if you don't intend to go off-road - CO2 emissions of 139g/km are very low for such a car.

4. Land Rover Discovery

A huge upgrade last year brought us the Discovery 4 with improved styling, a much improved cabin and a smooth 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine. Off-road ability is peerless, while on-road performance is much improved, too. The Disco is at home in the city as it is on the farm. Expensive, but reassureingly so.

5. Nissan Navara

The Navara offers the best of both worlds - rugged pick-up which can go anywhere and transport almost anything in the back, while in the five-seat cabin drivers and passengers can enjoy luxuries such as leather seats and satellite navigation. Recent upgrade brings a choice of two new diesels, including a 3.0-litre V6.
