  • Engine tech means impressive economy
  • Achievable in the real world too
  • CO2 emissions are great for BIK

Mazda’s M Hybrid mild-hybrid system boosts economy with quicker start-stop tech, while the advanced nature of the SkyActiv X engine technology means real-world results that get impressively close to the official claimed mpg figures.

Mixing the best eco qualities of combustion and compression ignition for a leaner fuel burn, it doesn’t need to use as much to get going, which has a positive effect on economy and performance.

Servicing and warranty

The service intervals for the Mazda 3 Saloon are 12,500 miles or 12 months – whichever comes sooner, although an on-board computer may reduce the interval further if driving style and types of journey demand it. An official Mazda service plan is available to help you spread costs.

Mazda cars come with a three-year / 60,000-mile warranty, with an extended warranty available from Mazda at extra cost. Neither the service intervals nor the the warranty are particular impressive compared with the best offered by rivals.

Reliability

  • Mazda has a good reliability record
  • But SkyActiv adds a lot of complexity
  • Some readers have experienced problem

Mazda has an excellent reputation for building dependable cars, and at this stage there are no signs of any consistently glaring issues with this generation of Mazda 3 Saloon.

SkyActiv engine technology is very clever but also very complex.

That Skyactiv X engine is complicated, however, so if anything is going to be problematic it’s probably that. Certainly that’s the area where some readers have experienced issues in the Mazda 3 Parkers owner review section, with complaints of poor responses and a temperamental stop-start system.

We’ve also received comments about easily marked trim, and road noise.
