The X-Trail scored four stars out of five in official Euro NCAP crash tests, which is on par with the Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Outlander. Nissan X-Trail safety equipment includes ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, dual front, side and curtain airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners All cars have an immobiliser, while top spec models have an ‘intelligent key’.

It can be left in a bag or pocket as the car senses you approach and unlocks automatically.

The X-Trail scores on a number of fronts when it comes to practicality. The load area is ingenious. Not only do the seats fold flat (they split 40/20/40) for an exceptionally large space capable of carrying big boxes, but there’s also a double-deck floor with pull-out drawers (see gallery). These can be sub-divided, which is ideal for keeping valuables safely out of view or simply to keep the cabin tidy.

The back is also made from a wipe-clean material – ideal for muddy boots. It’s a similar well-thought-out story at the front of the car. There are chilled cupholders for the driver and front passenger (in addition to two in the centre console), a large box in the middle of the dash and a big glovebox. There are also door bins and multiple seat-back pockets.
