Equipment

4.2 out of 5 4.2
  • Impressive levels of standard equipment
  • Pity autonomous emergency braking’s optional
  • Limited range of options, so little personalisation

Since its 2012 launch the Peugeot 208 range has been slimmed down in terms of trim level permutations, with the more popular choices remaining.

Consequently it’s a very well-equipped line-up of superminis.

Standard Peugeot 208 Hatchback equipment

Active

Entry-point to the 208 range is by no means a hair-shirt special designed for people looking for basic transportation. The standard equipment roster includes:

Allure

Step up to the more luxurious Allure and you’ll benefit from:

  • 16-inch Titane alloys
  • Front foglights with cornering function
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Chrome-look door mirror caps
  • Automatic headlamps
  • Automatic wipers
  • Automatically dipping rear-view mirror
  • Rear parking sensors

GT Line

Adding a degree of sportiness to the 208’s appearance, GT Line adds:

  • 17-inch Caesium alloys
  • Electrically folding door mirrors with gloss black housings
  • Single chrome exhaust pipe finisher
  • Electric rear windows
  • Sports steering wheel
  • Aluminium door sill treadplates
  • Aluminium pedals
  • Dual-zone climate control

GTi Prestige

Complementing the extra dose of performance, the GTi Prestige also comes with:

  • 17-inch Carbone alloys
  • Rear spoiler
  • Dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipe finishers
  • Chrome-look door mirror caps
  • Wheelarch extensions
  • 3D sat-nav with live traffic updates
  • Leather gearknob
  • Heated front sports seats with half-leather upholstery
  • Red LED instrumentation
  • Cielo panoramic glass roof

GTi by Peugeot Sport

Topping the range, the flagship GTi has a number of post-factory modifications courtesy of the firm’s racing division:

  • 18-inch matt black Lithium alloy wheels
  • Matt black finish to grille and door mirror caps
  • Red front brake callipers
  • 10mm lower suspension
  • Alcantara-upholstered sports seats

Optional Peugeot 208 Hatchback extras

Like many superminis, the 208 can be embellished with a range of non-standard alloy wheels and optional paint colours, but the Peugeot’s unique in also offering textured paint and the two-tone Coupe Franche finish.

Plus there are Menthol White and Lime Yellow detail packs for both the exterior and interiors, with appropriately coloured highlights.

Disappointingly not standard is the Active City Brake emergency autonomous braking system, while you similarly pay extra for an SOS system that contacts the emergency services if you’re unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident.

A reversing camera can also be installed, as can an automatic parking system.

If you like your music a little more old-school, then a Peugeot dealer can install a CD player.

Safety

4 out of 5 4.0
  • Five-star rating from Euro NCAP
  • Decent levels of standard safety kit
  • Autonomous emergency braking is extra, though

In crash tests by independent safety body Euro NCAP, the Peugeot 208 achieved five stars with positive overall feedback. It’s also worth pointing out this test was conducted in 2012 and the safety standards of superminis has continued to improve since then.

The 208’s safety kit list includes six airbags (two up-front, a pair at the sides and two curtain types) plus two Isofix child seat fixings with three-point attachments in the rear seat.

All 208s feature electronic stability control with anti-skid, electronic brake force distribution, and cornering brake control. The stability system also includes hill start assist, which helps prevent you rolling backwards, and traction control.

Frustratingly you have to pay extra for Active City Brake – Peugeot’s name for its autonomous emergency braking system – as well as the Connect SOS and Assistance system. This automatically contacts the appropriate emergency services in the event of an accident. The system is triggered by airbag deployment and the exact location of the stricken vehicle can be pinpointed by emergency crews.

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The Peugeot 208 Hatchback was tested by Euro NCAP in 2012 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2012
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 88%
Child Occupant: 78%
Pedestrian: 61%
Safety Assist: 83%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.

Interior & boot space

3.8 out of 5 3.8
  • Compact exterior; roomy interior
  • Boot space suffers compared with larger rivals
  • Lack of storage space for odds and ends

Compared with its 207 predecessor, the Peugeot 208 is more spacious and practical, despite its length and height being reduced but 7cm and 1cm respectively.

By making the packaging more efficient, there’s more space on board, allowing four six-foot tall adults to be accommodated easily – providing the headroom-robbing Cielo glass roof isn’t specified.

The front feels especially roomy, in large part because of how the dashboard in front of the passenger is scalloped away.

Given the minimalist look of the 208’s cabin, storage for odds and ends isn’t great and right-hand drive cars have a pathetically small glovebox due to the fusebox taking up about half of its potential volume.

The 208 is a doddle to drive around urban areas thanks to its diminutive dimensions, aided on higher spec models with rear parking sensors.

For an extra fee you can also specify a self-parking function but it’s very easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces anyway.

With the rear seats in place boot space is pegged at 285 litres, increasing to 1,152 litres with the rear seats folded over. You can’t access the release levers to fold the seatbacks from the boot, which makes performing the task irksome on three-door 208s. Be aware the seat doesn’t fold completely flat.

In later years all 208s had a 60:40 split rear seat as standard but this wasn’t the case on early lower-spec models.

It’s not the widest of boot openings either, plus the design means the tail lights encroach into the width of the opening – a point for form over function there.

How does the boot space compare?

Check the table below to see how the Peugeot 208 Hatchback compares to other similar cars in terms of available boot space.

Model Boot space
Citroën C3 (10-16) 300 litres
Ford Fiesta (08-17) 290 litres
Peugeot 208 Hatchback 285 litres
Suzuki Swift Hatchback (10-17) 211 litres
