BMW iX1 boot space, practicality and safety

2022 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 3.8 out of 53.8

  • Good space for for passengers
  • Big boot…
  • …Although not as large as an X1’s

How much space is there?

Up front there’s lots of head and legroom plus a decent amount of space between you and your front seat passenger. Even tall people will find enough adjustment in the seat to get their desired driving position.

It’s the same story in the rear. Unlike with other cars in this class, such as the Mercedes EQA, three adults can sit comfortably in the back seats. There’s a great deal of headroom back there too, plus the rear windows are tall and let lots of light in. Our only complaint is that the rear floor is quite high, pushing your knees up.

Boot space and storage

The iX1’s bootspace is pretty impressive. The boot – at 490 litres – is useful and loads bigger than the Mercedes EQA (340 litres) and a bit larger than the Volvo XC40 Recharge (452 litres). There’s a cubby beneath the floor for charging cables too.

Boot capacity is reduced compared to the X1, yet is still bigger than rivals such as the Mercedes GLA.

Up front you’ll find a large but shallow tray beneath the centre console, decent cupholders, useful door pockets and good oddment storage.

Is it easy to park?

All models come with a reversing camera and BMW’s parking assistant, which is capable of parking the car for you in the right circumstances. It works well but is a bit slower than doing it yourself.

The A-pillars (the ones either side of the windscreen) are quite thick, making front parking a bit trickier than it needs to be.

The iX1 doesn’t look a great deal different to the combustion engined X1.

Safety

  • Five star safety rating
  • Loads of tech on offer
  • No front Isofix

Euro NCAP, the European safety testing authority, has awarded the BMW X1 on which the iX1 is based a full five out of five stars.

It scored highly in the Safety Assist category, no doubt because of its impressive selection of standard safety kit, including AEB, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. It does without a front Isofix point, but does have anchor points on the two outer rear seats.
