Should you buy a used DS 3?

Yes, if you want a cheap to buy, affordable to run small car and desire a little more panache than a small Hyundai or a Ford Fiesta. However, there’s no escaping the fact that by the time it was called a DS, the car underneath was already quite dated.

A used DS 3 hatchback is a stylish alternative to the contemporary MINI Hatch and Audi A1, with generous levels of equipment and generally economical engines. The difference in second hand values means the rather dated cabin design feels like less of a problem than when it was new as well.

If you can find one the DS 3 Performance is quirky and entertaining, with some tuning potential.

What we like

Neat, predictable handling and good motorway ride, solid-feeling body, generally good build quality, potential economy of a well-maintained diesel.

What we don’t like

Small boot and three-door body suits drivers wanting a sporty runabout, but the shark-fin pillar and cramped rear seat access is less fun for passengers or children in child seats. Neglect of all models can get expensive, and DS parts supply as the car gets older may dry up rapidly. Not different enough from the Citroen C3.
