Hyundai Ioniq 6 boot space, practicality and safety

2022 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 3.7 out of 53.7

How much space is there?

Step inside the Ioniq 6 and you’ll find a light and airy interior with lashings of lounging room for five passengers. Space up front is plentiful with good storage, and the rear compartment is commodious, although that arcing roofline does pinch headroom a little.

Leg and elbow room is exceptional, although there’s very little in the way of area for feet underneath the front seats. Even so, this is a seriously roomy car that’s up there with the Skoda Superb or Audi A6.

An interesting feature is the ‘Relaxation’ front seats, which the top-spec model gets. They fully recline which is a welcome bonus when you find yourself needing to do an unplanned public charging session.

Boot space and storage

The boot capacity is 401 litres, which is a fair size, if not extraordinary, while the aperture isn’t particularly tall. The rear seats split in a 60/40 arrangement rather than the more useful 40/20/40 split you get in some cars, but it adds some welcome additional practicality to this saloon model. However, the downside is that the rear seats don’t slide or recline, as they do in the Ioniq 5.

In addition to the rear luggage area, you get a front boot (sometimes called a ‘froot’ or ‘frunk’), which creates a tiny additional area to stow charging cables. We particularly approve of the sheer number of stowage space dotted around the cabin, including the voluminous cubbyhole in the centre console and the large door pockets.

Is it easy to park?

Visibility isn’t great, which isn’t an ideal situation in a car of this size. But the parking cameras with dynamic line guidance work very well indeed. It’s an effective system that certainly makes the Ioniq 6 easier to park than it might have been. Ultimate-spec models also get a 3D surround-view camera setup, which can be swivelled around a clever 3D digital model of the car to show you your full surroundings.

Smart Park Assist as also available. This lets you drive the car forwards or back at very low speeds from the keyfob – handy to creep it out of a particularly tight parking bay where you can’t easily open the doors to get in.

Safety

  • Gets five stars from EuroNCAP
  • Low score for pedestrian protection, though
  • Driver-assistance technology is up there with the best

The Ioniq 6 has won a full five-star score from Euro NCAP when it was tested in 2022, with some very impressive scores.

However, where it scores 97% for adult occupant protection, and 87% for child occupants, this drops to 66% score for vulnerable road users. This is lower than rivals, and is probably down to the lack of a pop-up bonnet (which can protect the head of a pedestrian or cyclist in a frontal impact).

All models come with front, centre and side airbags for the front-seat passengers, but rear-seat passengers only get a head airbag, and neither chest nor pelvis protection from further airbags. The driver-assistance systems are excellent in use, with the adaptive cruise control working particularly well on UK motorways.
