Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 41 - 57 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Fuel economy is good across all three engines, especially the diesel. Insurance is reasonable (groups 3, 4 and five for the 1.2-litre, 1.4-litre and 1.4 TDI respectively), but Volkswagen dealer servicing and parts can be pricey.

Like the normal Polo, the Dune version is fairly green though and the 1.4 TDI engine will average more than 55mpg and emits 129g/km of CO2. There’s no BlueMotion model though.

This is a Polo with a higher ride height, bigger wheels and roof rails, so reliability should be just as good as the standard hatchback.
