Volkswagen has become the latest manufacturer to tap into the growing telematics side of the industry. The new service, which has been developed between VW Financial Services and the RAC, is available from February 2015 and costs just £12.50 per month.

Engineered to operate on fleets of any size, the new system is largely based on the current telematics service offered by the RAC. It can be fitted to almost any vehicle, meaning mixed fleet customers won’t be excluded.

As with most telematics services, the Volkswagen version monitors driver behaviour, including CO2 and fuel economy, collision detection, provides geofencing, and round the clock vehicle tracking. Unlike most of the competitors though, there is a ‘Driverline’ concierge service, which proactively contacts the customer to book maintenance service and manage vehicle downtime.

The service provides an efficient method for managing vehicle running costs, increasing efficiency and proactively reducing fleet downtime, and is accessible via laptop, tablet or smartphone.

“Running a cost-effective fleet is crucial to maintaining a profitable business, which is why more and more companies are investing in telematics to help manage their fleets”, explains Kevin Rendell, head of service and parts at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK.

“Our telematics system is a comprehensive solution, which can help companies to reduce fuel costs, extend the life span of parts and components, and optimise vehicle efficiency. It’s been designed to offer the level of quality and technical innovation that our customers expect from Volkswagen. It is much more than just a method for tracking driver behaviour and vehicle locations”.
