Ford has announced it is creating an all-new affordable electric vehicle platform that will sit under a range of body styles including a pickup truck that is said to cost from around $30,000 (around £22,000). The new platform will start appearing under Ford vehicles from as soon as 2027.

The new process is called the Universal Electric Vehicle Platform and is designed to cut down the number of stopping points on a production line, theoretically making the process simpler and therefore cheaper. The platform uses 20% less parts, has 40% fewer workstations on the assembly line and can be built 15% faster. Ford has also looked to make the batteries smaller, using lithium-iron-phosphate batteries that are cobalt and nickel free. The battery also acts as the vehicle floor. The motor can then be placed at the front or rear of the vehicle, meaning that Ford can offer more passenger space or more luggage room, as needed.

A pickup first

The first vehicle to come off the new production line is set to be a mid-size electric pickup truck, which will sit alongside the Ford Ranger. This will offer more space for passengers than the Toyota Rav-4, says Ford, while also providing a loading bay and a storage area under the front bonnet.

However, this is no staid and slow budget vehicle. Ford says it will be as fast from 0-60mph as its Mustang Ecoboost – that car manages the sprint in just under 5.0 seconds.

There will be a range of other vehicles to come off the new UEVP production line, with Ford showing silhouettes of a crossover, hatchback and two sizes of SUV. It also showed a panel van shape, which suggests that the next generation of its commercial vehicles could well be based on a totally different platform, despite the latest Ford Transit Custom only having been launched in late 2023.

When can I buy the new electric Ford pickup truck and how much will it cost?

The new electric pickup truck is set to go on sale as soon as 2027, according to Ford’s announcement. The stated starting price is around £22,000 but more details will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch. This should include information on features such as the battery size and range and the charging time.
