BMW iX2 SUV rivals
Overview
The BMW iX2 is the electric version of the BMW X2, which means it’s an SUV coupe that’s also closely related to the more conventional BMW X1 and equivalent iX1 EV. While not a challenger for our overall list of the best SUVs, if you’re after a small electric SUV with a dash of style and an impressive electric drive system you should pay close attention to it.
While the new X2 is also available with petrol engines, our focus here is on the electric iX2. There are two versions available – the eDrive20, which will go up to 297 miles between charges, and the more powerful xDrive30 which features two electric motors, giving it all-wheel drive and plenty of performance. This has a claimed 267-mile range and is the only iX2 we’ve driven to date.
Coupe SUVs, especially of the electric variety, are a growing market, as they manage to bring sleeker styling to a pre-existing model, and manufacturers can charge more for them. Key competitors include the Audi Q4 E-tron Sportback and Volvo C40, soon to be renamed EC40, while a cheaper option is the Skoda Enyaq Coupe.
If you’re happy to trade some spaciousness in the name of style – and pay a premium for it too – these coupe-styled SUVs are worth looking at. BMW has been doing it for years with its X4 and X6 and now the X2 adopts this tapered roofline for the first time too.
In the UK the iX2 is sold in just a single M Sport trim level. Priced from £51,615, or £57,445 if you want the more powerful version, it doesn’t come cheap. Prices are comparable to key rivals from Audi and Volvo, while standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, heated seats and a large Curved Display that merges together a touchscreen and digital instrument cluster.
There are plenty of options available on top, including an M Sport Pro Pack that brings additional styling elements and a Technology Plus Pack with adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display and even a light-up grille.
