Practicality rating: 5 out of 55.0

The new Ford Tourneo Connect achieved a full five star rating during its round of EuroNCAP tests.

All versions have high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel used in key areas of their construction, while anti-lock brakes(ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) are standardised.

Additionally, day running lights and enormous tail lamps increase the Tourneo’s visibility to other road users, while automatically activated headlights and wipers are either standard or optional depending upon model.

Highly visible seatbelt reminders for all seats prompt everyone to buckle up, while front and side curtain airbags help protect occupants in the event of an accident.

Those carrying younger passengers will be pleased to note that the outer two rear seat positions have ISOFIX mountings for child restraints.

Just a casual glance at its upright body suggests Ford Tourneo Connect practicality is going to be a strong point. Slide open the rear doors or pop up the enormous tailgate and you won’t be disappointed.

Ford’s van-based people carriers offer significantly more practicality and space than the car-like ‘MAX’ range, and offer better value for money too. The result is the Tourneo Connect offers more versatility than a C-MAX for little more than B-MAX money.

Tumble the rear seats forward to create a flat load bed and the Tourneo’s van origins become clear, with a maximum capacity of 2,410 litres of space. The 1.8m long floor can be further extended to carry long items by tipping the front passenger seat forward too.

Even with the 60:40 split rear seat occupied, the boot still offers 1,029 litres of volume, although that is up to the roofline.

Numerous stowage spaces are dotted around the cabin ensuring there are plenty of options for families to hide all the paraphernalia they often take with them on trips.

Zetec and Titanium models have rear windows which retract electrically, an optional feature on the Style trim, while all-round visibility is excellent.
