How car tax rates are calculated

For cars registered after March 1st, 2001, the DVLA car tax rate (Vehicle Excise Duty) is based on the car's CO2 emissions and the type of fuel it uses.

For cars registered before March 1st, 2001, car tax is based on engine size only. There is one rate for engines up to 1549cc and one for 1550cc and over.
