There are plenty of reasons to like the Audi A1 Sportback: it has five doors making it a more practical choice over the standard A1 hatchback, while it’s still one of the most premium-feeling cars in this sector.
It also gives Audi the chance to challenge the MINI Clubman as a viable five-door small car. With that premium feel comes a more premium price tag, and the Audi A1 Sportback is one of the more expensive choices in this class.
Add to this the numerous options and the cost of the A1 can be close to that of medium hatchback. What you do get though is supreme build quality and the German manufacturer’s well-established reliability record.
As with the standard A1 hatchback, at launch the Sportback came with an excellent choice of fuel efficient or performance-focused petrol engines while the diesel options offer incredibly low running costs. There is also some clever technology available that helps to lower emissions and improve fuel economy.
As with the standard three-door model, there is the rather thuggish 182bhp model on offer if buyers want something with a little more attitude.
The most interesting choice, however, is the 1.4-litre petrol model that comes with cylinder-on-demand technology. This will cut the engine to two cylinders whenever possible and means emissions of just 108g/km.
Opt for the 1.6-litre diesel engine and you’ll find it’s incredibly fuel efficient with an average official fuel economy of 74.3mpg. It also emits just 99g/km, which lowers annual road tax along with company car tax.
At the same time the more powerful 2.0-litre diesel version emits 108g/km and will average 68mpg, according to Audi.
Facelift in 2015
As well as styling revisions including a wider grille, new bumpers and alloy wheel designs, facelifted models offer more equipment, and new or improved engines.
These include, for the first time, a 1.0 TFSI three-cylinder unit, and power boost for the cylinder-on-demand engine. The 1.6-litre diesel has an improved efficiency of 80.7mpg and 92g/km of CO2, says Audi.
